Woodworking/carvingDisplay of work at the Annual Members' Meeting, April 2007
Woodworking/Woodcarving Group.
The group meets on each Thursday afternoon in the garage of the co-ordinator at Netheredge, S7. The garage is transformed into a workshop for this but we are limited for space and consequently is limited to a small group of five. It is very informal with no tutor or set course as we prefer to learn from each other’s experience. Each person works at their own level and pace, choosing their own subject. Some will see a piece of wood with a shape or colour which inspires them. Others will have a desire to carve something particular and seek out a piece of wood suitable for the purpose. We chat together, passing comments, sometimes encouraging, sometimes critical. All good fun with no strings attached. Most will have some tools of their own but some tools are available for anyone wanting to try their hand before buying any. Very little machinery is used as it is nearly all hand work.
As well as woodwork and carving projects, marquetry is another interesting and enjoyable way of displaying the beauty of wood, in this case using veneers to make pictures or patterns. Not much equipment is required and it can be continued at home on the kitchen table.
It is all very satisfying, working with wood, a natural material with a wide variety of features; hardness, softness, toughness, direction of grain, patterns in the grain, colour etc. remembering it was once part of a living tree somewhere in the world.
