The group is a mix of people: half have good Classical Greek skills, half are newish beginners.  Everyone has significant foreign language experience in a range of modern languages to degree level, everyone has at least Latin O level.  Four of us in this group, including myself, have completed two years study of Classical Greek with the Open University.  We are initially refreshing Classical Greek language knowledge, with additional support for those with least knowledge.  We are using a modern text (which has benefited from the new approaches used in modern language learning) that encourages language acquisition from the reading of real Greek literature right from the start.

This is a conversational group and we try to converse in French for up to an hour. Members are expected to introduce a topic of conversation from time to time. We use the magazine “La Vie Outre Manche” for general reading. The magazine has topical articles and articles of general interest and in themselves stimulate conversation. Some of the articles are recorded on tape which we purchase and listen to as an aid to pronunciation. We do not have a tutor but points of grammar are discussed as they arise.

Our main focus is on conversational French, but the content of the session is varied. Some time is spent in general conversation and some on pre-planned topics introduced by members of the group. This may be an informal presentation aimed at generating discussion on a subject which would otherwise not arise and so introduce new vocabulary. Points of grammar, phrases or expressions in common usage are addressed in more structured exercises using the magazine French Accent. All is done with the help of an experienced and qualified group member.

Our emphasis is with French conversation on previously agreed topics. We develop our listening skills by listening to French people speaking. We attend to aspects of grammar, and play word games to maintain a light hearted approach to our learning.

We are a friendly, intermediate group and enjoy our meetings.
At the moment we are reading our way through a series of extracts from the writings of modern Italian novelists.  The book is "quante storie!" and includes exercises, grammar points and topics for discussion.
We encourage news from members at our meetings, and, with current affairs and cultural items, try to converse in Italian wherever possible.

Advanced members use free discussion to improve vocabulary and fluency. We aim to achieve fluency so that holidays in Italy are more enjoyable and memorable.

We are learning Latin using an ‘old-fashioned’ text book (published in 1999) which confronts the grammar of the language head-on and teaches in a thorough and lucid manner. To quote from the preface: “Learning Latin is not the easiest thing you could choose to do. In fact some of you will find it devilish difficult. But it can be done…….. and your brain will do so many mental somersaults and press-ups that you will find anything else you turn to laughably easy by comparison.”

The main focus of the meeting is Greek Grammar and its frustrating inconsistencies, so we really value having a native speaker. Members write a short passage- either on a previously agreed topic or on a subject important to
the members, which is read out and discussed. Inevitably, there is discussion about contemporary Greek life. This Group is not suitable for beginners.
