The group is a mix of people: half have good Classical Greek skills, half are newish beginners.  Everyone has significant foreign language experience in a range of modern languages to degree level, everyone has at least Latin O level.  Four of us in this group, including myself, have completed two years study of Classical Greek with the Open University.  We are initially refreshing Classical Greek language knowledge, with additional support for those with least knowledge.  We are using a modern text (which has benefited from the new approaches used in modern language learning) that encourages language acquisition from the reading of real Greek literature right from the start.

This is a conversational group and we try to converse in French for up to an hour. Members are expected to introduce a topic of conversation from time to time. We use the magazine “La Vie Outre Manche” for general reading. The magazine has topical articles and articles of general interest and in themselves stimulate conversation. Some of the articles are recorded on tape which we purchase and listen to as an aid to pronunciation. We do not have a tutor but points of grammar are discussed as they arise.

We are not a beginners group, there is a considerable range of ability but what we have in common is a keen interest in Italy, its history, culture and current affairs. We listen to Italian on tapes/CD’s, we read texts from ”Acquarello” and newspapers. We try to converse in Italian as much as possible and members take it in turns to give short presentations and introduce topics.

The main focus of the meeting is Greek Grammar and its frustrating inconsistencies, so we really value having a native speaker. Members write a short passage- either on a previously agreed topic or on a subject important to
the members, which is read out and discussed. Inevitably, there is discussion about contemporary Greek life.

All members of the group have some degree of competence. Classes do not have a fixed format but are designed to reinforce existing skills. We read and discuss current affairs articles.  Vocabulary and grammatical points are dealt with as they arise.  Discussion arises spontaneously. Listening skills are exercised from time to time with audio tapes of native Spanish speakers.   A welcoming, friendly, unpressurised and mutually supportive group.
