Flying Gardeners

The Flying Gardeners and the Whirlowbrook Park Gardeners have sessions which are open to every SU3A member – all you need are suitable footwear and gloves! We meet on the fifth Wednesday (about 4 times a year) from 9.30 to 12 md. We work in different parks that don’t have their own volunteer group, under the supervision of a park ranger.

Our next session is on October 31st by the upper pond in Whirlowbrook Park. Bring boots and gloves – tools and refreshments are provided.

If you feel inspired to join our friendly SU3A group please contact Shelagh Woolliscroft on 255 8948. or

SU3A Commemorative Garden Event, Whirlowbrook Gardens, Wednesday 13 June 2018

Whirlowbrook Park SU3A’s Biennial Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance:

A Garden Makeover: Tucked away behind the lily pond in Whirlowbrook Park is a garden well worth a visit. Seven years ago this part of the lovely park was a wasteland, full of bramble, nettle and debris. The Victorian rock garden was covered in weeds.

Things started to change in 2010. SU3A were looking for a way of commemorating our silver jubilee in 2011. SU3A visited the park, thinking may be to plant a tree or donate a bench ….. Today, it is designated as a commemorative garden, with most plants donated by SU3A members in memory of loved ones and the donations duly recorded in an illustrated book

On a lovely Wednesday morning on 13 June, members and those associated with the upkeep of the gardens attended the Commemorative Event. Poems were read and songs were sung to the delight of the audience. Photos and short video clips were also taken to document this event.

Ian Duffy was the piper. He had been taught by our previous piper, Joe McNulty, who sadly died. Ian was delighted to be able to give something back.
